High Altitude Sickness

Trail West-Buena Vista - Altitude - 8760 feet

What is Altitude Sickness?

Physical distress from difficulty adjusting to lower oxygen pressure at high altitude. Most cases of altitude sickness are mild, but some may be life-threatening.

Symptoms tend to occur within hours after arrival at high altitude and include headache, nausea, shortness of breath, and inability to exercise.

Mild cases may resolve in one to three days. Severe cases may require medical attention; oxygen, medications, and moving to a lower altitude.

What is the fastest way to adjust to high altitude?

  1. Drink Lots of Water. As you gain altitude, your body tends to lose water and salt faster than you're used to.

  2. Reduce Your Exercise.

  3. Get Enough Sleep.

  4. Increase Your Electrolyte Levels.

  5. Protect Yourself From the Sun.

  6. Consume More Calories.
